First days in Sydney

First of all, I'm sorry I still haven't posted my raport from Singapore. They had run out of adaptors at Kmart so I haven't been able to use my laptop. But I'll sort it out today and hopefully will also get it connected to a wireless network at home so I can go online anytime. I'm at the UTS right now, checking my email and making some final changes to my study plan.

Nothing too exciting going on here yet... I've been just cleaning my room, shopping for some essential stuff and so on. Yesterday I went for a sightseeing run and after getting lost (to those of you that are familiar with Claudelin's rule: it might need some modifying lol) I saw some nice parks, the Sydney Opera House, tons of stores with good sales, people, cars, skyscrapes etc. The more I see around Sydney the more I feel I'm just going to love this city! I also went to see the UTS Fitness Centre and if I find some good training pants today I think I'll go to my first workout class tomorrow.

Australia!!

I already wrote a bunch about my weekend in Singapore while I was waiting for a flight at the Perth airport but I can't get it posted online yet because the text is on my laptop that's run out of battery and I don't have an adaptor yet. I'll add it here as soon as possible.

So, I'm finally in Australia! The journey has been really tiring since I couldn't fall asleep the night before my flight from Singapore to Perth, then I had a 9-hour-long stopover in Perth before my flight to Sydney, and I couldn't sleep on the place either because the air conditioning was too cold. So when I arrived in Sydney this morning at 6am I hadn't slept properly for 40 hours and was feeling really dizzy. I had to wait for the UTS Housing Service to open at 9 to get my house key. Then I walked to Geegal, which is about to be my new home for the next year. I met Moi from Mexico and he accompanied me to the Broadway Shopping Centre to buy some linen and towels. Then it was finally time to get some sleep! I slept for a couple of hours and felt a lot better after that. I headed back to the shopping centre to get some dinner and buy more stuff. Since I got back from there I've been just cleaning my room, doing laundry and unpacking... I met two of the guys living in our flat; Tim and Andrei (at least I believe that's his name) from Australia. I also met a bunch of other Geegal people outside the house but can't recall their names yet.

My first impression of Sydney, which is just walking from the Central Station to the UTS Main Building and to Geegal and to Broadway, is really good! It's lots of people and traffic, lots to see and do :) It's around 25C here now but it feels hotter than in Singapore because the sun is shining. I already got a bit tan while I was walking outside.

Geegal seems like a nice place to live. The courtyjard is under construction at the moment so I haven't seen it properly yet but it looks like a nice place to hang around once it's finished. There are separate flats in the building, 6 people living in each. In the ground floor there are a lounge room with couches and a TV and a kitchen. My room is in the upper floor. The furniture isn't really new but it's clean and in good condition. I like especially the huge mirrors attached to my wardrobe that make the room look bigger. I think I'll be just fine living here :)

Now it's 9:30 and I think it's time for me to go to bed. I can't wait for tomorrow when I'll feel more energetic and can actually do some stuff! (Sorry for the bad English, I'm just too lazy to pay any attention to grammar right now.)

It´s not easy saying goodbye :(

I´m in Kajaani at the moment. We arrived here late last night with all of my stuff - It´s unbelievable I´ve managed to get so much of it in just 2 and half years! I had to leave most of my furniture behind but I´ve got pretty much everything else stored here at my mothers. It´s -20C here and it feels even colder since I haven´t gotten used to the cold weather during this unusually warm and rainy winter. It´s going to be a fantastic contrast going to Singapore where it's around +30C! Just imagine the difference of 50 degrees!

Even though I´m more than excited about finally leaving for Australia and I wouldn't change this to anything it really is sad saying goodbye to my friends. I´m used to being apart from my family and my friends from Kajaani and Oulu but it´s going to be weird not having everyone from Lappeeranta around anymore. I spent some moments crying and hugging my closestNow friends yesterday and the day before. I´m so grateful I've gotten to know such fantastic people <3 Actually leaving just because I want to, not because I need to escape something, feels strange but good, especially since I haven´t done it for a while.

5 days till departure!

For the past 3 years it´s been my dream and goal to live in Australia and now it´s finally about to come true! I´ll be studying at the University of Technology Sydney this upcoming year 2007. I´m looking forward to learning the Australian lifestyle and culture, traveling around, meeting new people and just experiencing everything that comes to my way during that year. I can´t wait to start my adventure!

Right now I´m still in Lappeenranta; recovering from the farewell party I had last night, packing up my stuff and filling out scholarship applications. I´ve been counting days till my departure for a few months already and now it´s getting really close! Since my biggest concern at the moment is deciding what clothes to take with me I guess I´m doing pretty well with all my preparations.

On Monday my father and sister will drive here to pick up my furniture and other stuff to take to Kajaani to be stored during my exchange. I´ll go with them and from Kajaani I´ll take a train to Helsinki from where my flight departs on Thursday at 17:10. I´ll fly to Singapore, with a stop over in London Heathrow, where I´ll spend a couple of days visiting my friend Silja, who´s doing an exchange there. Then I´ll head for Australia, first to Perth and then finally to Sydney!
